Dr. Zaheer Khan 

Dr. Khan is the Founder and President of the Center for Elder Care. He was born in Gulbarga, India. 

He completed medical school followed by a specialty fellowship at the Bowring & Lady Curzon Hospital and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bangalore. After leaving the National Institute, he worked in the mountains of Kurdistan for seven years. Dr. Khan furthered his education in the field of Gerontology, geriatrics, and end of life care  in England,  where he also became a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP). In 1991, he came to the USA and worked at a AIDS hospital in Jersey City. He then did a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine from University of Alabama in Birmingham, while also serving as an assistant professor in the UAB Huntsville campus.

 Dr. Khan has been a resident of Huntsville since 1997 and established the Center for Elder Care in 2009.

Dr. Khan has three Nurse Practitioners that work as a part of his team at the Center for Elder Care. The nurse practitioners are trained in geriatric medicine and work hand in hand with Dr. Khan to manage complex chronic and acute conditions. Dr. Khan makes daily hospital rounds at both Crestwood and Huntsville Hospital 7 days a week and is also in the office on a daily basis.  The nurse practitioners make it possible for the patients to be seen in the office for same day appointments. Even when a patient is seen by the nurse practitioner Dr. Khan oversees each individual patient encounter. 

In recent years, Dr. Khan has established a non-profit organization, the Center For Aging, that aims to improve the quality of life of the elderly population in Huntsville. 


Dr. Anand S. Balachandran 

Dr. AB started offering comprehensive cardiology services at  the Heart and Vascular Clinic in 2016. He graduated from the University of Kannur in 2005. He later completed his residency training at The Brooklyn Medical Center. He was appointed the Chief resident for the residency program after which Dr. Balachandran underwent cardiology training at Weill Cornell Medical Center and at Mount Sinai-Beth Israel-Brooklyn Hospital Center fellowship programs graduating as the chief fellow.  

He relocated to Huntsville, Alabama in 2016 and has been providing cardiac care to patients in Madison County with services at both local hospitals. His areas of specialization include Coronary Artery Disease, Cardiac arrhythmias, Hypertension, Hypercholesterolemia, Peripheral Artery Disease, Congestive Heart Failure, and other cardiac conditions. Dr. Balachandran has co-authored many articles in scientific journals and has been actively involved in medical research. He has been affiliated with  several academic societies, and is a member of the American Society of Echocardiography, American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and is registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Vascular Sonography. 

Dr. Anand S. Balachandran is board certified in Internal Medicine  and Cardiology and he is a licensed physician in the State of Alabama.

Julie Beard, CRNP 

Julie is a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP), who works in conjunction with Dr. Zaheer Khan to provide care for the elderly. Julie joined the Center For Elder Care in 2013 after completing 2 years of clinical training with Dr. Khan and receiving her Masters of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Belmont University in 1998  and has had seven years of Neuro experience and eight years of hospice experience before joining the Center for Elder Care as a Adult Gerontological Nurse Practitioner. Julie has two children and is very involved in her church and enjoys gardening, singing, and playing the piano. 



IMG 5124Betsy Osborn, CRNP 

Betsy is a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP), who works in conjunction with Dr. Zaheer Khan to provide care for the elderly. Betsy joined our team in 2014  after completing 2 years of training with Dr. Khan and receiving her Masters of Science in Nursing at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She attended Auburn University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2009. She practiced as a cardiac nurse at Huntsville Hospital for four years before joining the Center for Elder Care as an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner. Betsy is happily married to her husband, Michael. She is very involved in her church and enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends. 


IMG 5147Amy Hunter, DNP, CRNP 

Amy is a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) who joined the Center for Elder Care in 2014. She had 10 years of experience in the operating room and medical surgical nursing prior to joining the Center for Elder Care as a nurse practitioner. Amy finished her Doctorate in Nursing Practice  (DNP) degree in December of 2015 with a scholarly project focus of “Exercise and Fall Prevention in Older Adults” in collaboration with Dr. Zaheer Khan. Amy is a full time faculty member at The University of Alabama in Huntsville and teaches in the undergraduate nursing program specializing in Gerontological nursing care also in collaboration with Dr. Zaheer Khan and the Center for Elder Care. Amy is married with one teenage son. She enjoys outdoor activities and watching her son play sports.
